Pi Chapter’s Stacia Kinman ( above right) received a $491.96 grant from the Public Education Foundation of Evansville, Inc. Stacia describes the project below:
Building Family Literacy: A Take-Home Book Library "Our mission at Fairlawn is for all students to achieve proficiency…and beyond! Our goal is to have at least 80% of our 2nd graders reaching grade-level reading benchmarks during core instruction. In order to become proficient readers, students must have access to high-quality, appropriate-leveled books to read at home so they can practice what they’ve learned in core instruction. By creating a take-home library, we can send high-quality, leveled books home with students to read - encouraging family engagement and reinforcing essential literacy skills. Our project supports family literacy by creating a library of quality, level-appropriate take-home books that students can take home and read together with their families. We will purchase books from an organization called KeepBooks.org. This program, located at The Ohio State University, offers quality, leveled, affordable books that are designed for students to take home to practice reading. The books, which include title bundles such as Letters, Words, & Numbers, Raccoon Family Adventures, Silly Animal Poems, and Fact/Fiction, are endorsed by national literacy experts Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell. The profits from KeepBooks.org funds literacy programs at The Ohio State University – which means twice the literacy impact! Sending a leveled text home with each student is essential in order for students to have practice with the skills they learn during the school day, such as fluency, vocabulary skills, and comprehension. With the $491.96 grant we received from the Public Education Foundation’s Excellence in Education project, we will be helping our students achieve proficiency…and beyond!" |
